Let This Mind Be In You

By Stephen C. Kanski

I really Love this passage of scripture found in Philipians 2:55-7:

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

I get the image of a mind outside myself attempting to merge with my mind but requiring my permission to do so. The author appears to be urging me to open my mind and allow this other mind access.

Of course, what this scripture is actually exhorting is for us to allow a change of heart and to embrace the attitude and character of Christ in His servant’s role. But, in considering our Christian calling, the idea of one mind attempting to merge with another is not far from the truth. The other mind is, of course, the mind of Christ as represented to us by the Holy Spirit. He is constantly working to bring our minds into compliance with His own, the process required for us to bear fruit.

One of the most amazing chapters in the entire New Testament is 1 Corinthians 2, and I strongly urge you to go reread it.

We have all heard the Old Testament scripture quoted that says:

Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.(Apostle Paul’s paraphrasing of Isaiah 64:4 as quoted in 1Corinthians 2:9)

This passage describes the state of man without the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:10: But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

Jesus foretold this very concept when He said:

John 16:13 Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth.

Let this Mind be in you!
