Hindrances To Faith – Receiving Honor From Men Not God - (Part 4)

By Stephen C. Kanski

In the very beginning of His earthly ministry, in the Sermon On The Mount, Jesus was quick to teach us that performing our works to be seen by man would disqualify us from receiving from God. In essence, He taught that accolades received from men constitutes our reward. So we either receive honor from men or from God, but not both.

Look at Matthew 6:1:

Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

In John 5:41-44, Jesus, speaking to the crowd, said,

41 I receive not honour from men.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

So we see that if we are satisfied with the accolades of men, that will be our reward. Faith is nullified. We will receive nothing from God.

The Cure: Our motivation in all that we do must be to please God and not man.

Matt. 6:5-6

5 ¶ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
